MAKING A MARK THIS WEEK: TIM SALE

This guy is one of the best artists to ever step foot inside the comics industry. Able to put his own spin on any character he touches, making them seem as though you are seeing them for the first time despite up to 60 years of continuity in the characters pockets, the vision of Tim Sale is like that of no other.

The colour-blind artist excels at line, shade and composition - you can actually see the pre-thought out design layouts in his work! Simple, strong and powerful, he even includes thoughts on my favourite element of design - Typography - and how the font relates to his art. Infact he has even created his own set of fonts through the desire of finding one which exactly suits his purposes.

From the definitive Batman: The Long Halloween to Hulk: Gray Sale has illustrated nearly all the main powerhouse characters in comics, and I would eat all my vegetables for a year to have his ink-wash art tackle Wonder Woman, Doc Savage or Adam Strange next.

For more, either check out his book 'Drawing Heroes In The Backyard: Tim Sale Black and White' or delve into one of the best personal artist websites around (timsale1.com) for a complete range of sketches, methods, influences and insights into the projects which bare his name!

  1. Honestly, Tim Sale's the man. He does so much with shadow and contrast. Of course, Long Halloween is pretty much my favorite Bat story, so I can't help but love the guy. He's a genius!
