Every Sunday, Making A Mark features one of the insanely talented artistic folk, currently living up large on the pages of Selection is simple; search for a visual character, pick the greatest visual, then give it's maker a little brag spot right here on IADW.

Legion of Doom by Tom Whalen, aka dArt's; strongstuff

This is what I love about deviantART; you can be just harmlessly exploring the depths of it's artistic oceans, when 'BOOM!' you run across an artist who instantly becomes one of your favourite talents from that moment on. Case in point: Tom Whalen.

Mixing retro-style, nostalgia, brilliant typography and strong solid design, Tom has created a portfolio that is simply amazing to flip through. From posters of classic films like The Fly, to images of folks like the Transformers and all points in between, his work is as fresh as it is exciting.

So exciting infact, picking what pieces to spotlight here this week was a task and a half. Deciding to close on a few examples of his 'mini-bust' sub-gallery, you'll see by using just a characters torso, and a smidge of related detail, he not only nails their personality, but their fan appeal as well.

For the complete range of Tom Whalen's talents, be sure to visit his deviantART nesting grounds, or the man himself, at

  1. That LOD piece is my favorite piece of artwork you've posted on IADW, ever.

  2. Thanks for that Rob - yeah it is one of my favourites too!

I mean that to me is my Lex Luthor, in the purple top, and who can argue with anything that's got The Riddler in?

Love the haunted house in the background to imply doom too. Very nice!

  3. Awesome "find" Dan!
