MAKING A MARK: Candra - The Soviet Superstar Whose Work Will Blow Your Mind

Every week, Making A Mark gives an insanely talented artist a little brag-space right here on IADW. This week, it's the turn of Candra - a Russian illustrator, proving on the other side of the former 'Iron Curtain' is not only a thriving artistic culture, but an amazing amount of detail and sense of colour, right in her very own works..

I loved Marc Silvestri's redesigned Phoenix outfit in the pages of Grant Morrison's New X-Men run - so it's great I'm not alone! A massive departure from Jean's usual wardrobe, it showed how liberated the Phoenix Force made her. Like Sandy from Grease in a more 'obliterate the earth' kinda way.

While that is the hottest and best I have ever seen super-rouge Silver Banshee look, the Lobo piece to the right is an actual commission for a lady who wanted herself drawn into an image with DC's main man! I guess if bad boy's are your type - you can't get them any wickeder than Lobo! Me? I prefer my Titans...

While Kory appears to like keeping her hands on titans of her own, this piece really does smack the air from your lungs. After a few years as DC's resident nomad, I'm glad Starfire will be getting some decent exposure in DC's 52 title relaunch this September.

For more of Candra's intimate artworks, simply click the jumpPlease note; as you can tell Candra has a knack for slash fan fiction. So if even saltier images of tender moments between Archangel and Iceman, or M.J and The Black Cat aren't your thing, you might want to just park up here at IADW.

  1. wow. Just WOW. Really brings one back to the Marvel of the early 90's with the stripper-esque costumes...and bodies. Make mine Marvel.

  3. Thanks guys - thought Candra's work would go down well. I found her ages ago, but my list of 'Making a Markist's' has got so long she got a little buried!

I love the Silver Banshee one best myself, which is something I never thought I'd say - but the mood she created with such little movement or colour is just amazing.

    Then there's Starfire...

From now on though M.A.M will be every Wednesday and Sunday - so tat will help me pile through the backlog. Hope everyone likes the artists that are ahead!

  7. ya know Dan i always have trouble spotting the links on your postings mate. so i just checked out her gallery and it's quite extensive. i'm thinking she may like boobs even more then i do which i didn't think was possible. i can't help but wonder about female artists like Candra who specialize in erotic feminine imagery how far that "appreciation" goes for the female form if you know what i mean.

  8. It doesn't make her a bad girl Dave.

  9. that all depends on how you define "bad" Craig. i've known some bad girls in my time who damn good at being bad. but in order to handle bad girls like that you have to be a bad boy. otherwise you end up being just like the guy in the latest Savage Love column from last week. ya know which guy i'm talking about?

  10. Hey Pensol! You and me both! Imagine that Starfire number as a feature wall - definitely a traffic stopper that's for sure!

Dave - pretty much anywhere you see 'click the jump' is a link - or grey text. But you raise a good point and it's something I think I can play with going forwards, so as the panadol folk say - let me know if pain persists!

  11. I learned long ago that if Dan says "click the jump", it's usually a good thing. Some of the additional artwork I've seen is absolutely mind blowing, and although Dan usually shares the best stuff with us, sometimes there's a prize waiting for you at the bottom of the cereal box.

  12. Okay, I didn't much care for the Phoenix picture. Guess I'm too set in my ways for the way the bird seems to be flying off her chest. She looked much more malevolent back in the day, I think. But that Starfire. Oh my gosh. THAT is amazing. I'll betcha good 'ole Dicky has a picture like that up somewhere in the back of one of his closets.

  13. Thanks for the faith Craig! This has to be one of the most popular posts I've done Random. Shows what an in-touch Starfire can do doesn't it? ;D

  14. I'm loving readding this post AND the coments.
Starfire with her hands on her Titans, was precious and very funny.
My favorite was also the silver Banshee. She had na eerie look very
    apropriate for her.
    That was amazing work.
    I love those flames.
