MAKING A MARK: Oliver Nome - The Man Whose B&W Gallery Is Bloody Wonderful

Twice a week, Making A Mark gives an insanely talented artist some IADW brag-space. Today goes to Oliver Nome, an American illustrator whose online portfolio shifts into hyperdrive the moment you take away colour. How can that be when such a step flies in the face of all logic? Why just look at this Hellboy meets Wolverine and find out;

In Paris no less! Oliver's ability to shift line weight is uncanny. If you're doin' the decent thing and clicking to enlarge each of these images, you'll see what I mean in Hellboy's face alone. It's one of the best around - including against Mignola's own handiwork!

While his gallery of work also shows he can capture character without backdrops or in colour, it's pieces like these that really set me off. Not only is the detail the stuff of legend, when characters like Domino (Oliver's first shot at drawing her) and Chamber get a look in, you know you are onto a pretty good thing.

As for Doctor Strange, surely art like this proves that classic costume just can't be beaten? Speaking of the ultra-powerful in suits you just can't improve on...

What is it about omnipotent divas that make them register on everyone's radar of awesome? Here Dark Phoenix she shows she can do the whole rising winds thing as well as Storm, plus she has the washed out pupils to match! Now how much to see them fight?

For more of Oliver's work, visit his online gallery after the jump.

  1. Can't believe I'm the 1st one commenting, but Damn! Sir Oliver rocks the house w/ that sweet, sweet art.

    Dark Phoenix and Dr.Strange are my favorites, but there all really well done. It's hard to pick out a specific artist, but maybe a Chris Bachelo influence in there?

    Whadda' say Dan?

  2. I love that you're digging up all the Domino art. This guy is amazing and that Phoenix piece is just crazy good.

  4. I think you're hitting the nail on the head Dale - deffinitly got a bit of Bachalo going down in those pics - esp the more x-realted ones! See some Jim Cheung here and there too (who I think also follows Chris in style) but that could just be me.

    I thought you'd like the Domino one Craig. Hopefully she plays a good role in the Cable series coming up maybe even taking down an Avenger or three!

    I agree Aliera - it's a pretty sweet first try. Wish my first sketches of a character worked out that well. I don't think I'd bother with a second if it did!
