NOW THAT'S A SPLASH PAGE: His Name Is Bishop - And Nothing Will Ever Be The Same!

Splash pages, you gotta love 'em. A blank canvas where the artist can hit you with a large dose of illustrated 'wow'. This week I'm going back to my hip-deep in X-Men days and Uncanny X-Men #282. A place where a face-slap load of cool was unleashed on the final page by artist Whilce Portacio. It's name? Bishop.

While the apocalyptic future Bishop escaped from has been nothing compared to the one Marvel gave him post saving all reality in the Age of Apocalypse, I really dug Bishop as a character. Chasing down escaped convicts from a future he hoped to prevent, his shoot first, ask questions third attitude was unique even in the gun-totting 90's.

That's why seeing him become the Elmer Fudd to Cable's Daffy Duck as they fight over the life of the mutant Hope, well it just feels like so much squandered potential. Hopefully with Hope looming large in Marvel's plans for 2012, Bishop's own personal character salvation isn't that far away either.
