MAKING A MARK: Rudy Ao - The Digital Artist From Singapore With A Wicked Darkseid

Twice a week, Making A Mark gives an insanely talented artist some IADW brag-space. Today goes to Rudy Nurdiawan aka Rudy Ao, an illustrator of Indonesian descent, currently living in Singapore, whose art truly goes 'Boom!'. Can you imagine Thor above is a digital 'speed paint'? If so, I'd kill to see the time-intensive version!

One piece that really stood out in his portfolio of big mythic characters and strongmen (strong-people?), was Robin below. Even though it is done as a commission, it's cool to see how artists tackle characters that play against their strengths, while still creating frame-able art.

Wonder Woman also plays against type, with a switch of media to watercolour and the use of light over dark. Still the fierce gaze Rudy's given the warrior princess, I'm sure 'black and blue' will still be in the future of those that cross her. Actually, this guy's been known to do just that and live to tell the tale...

Another 'speed' work, this time in gouache, colour pencil and CS3, Rudy surprised himself with how well the Lord of Apokolips turned out. Me I'm thinking you don't have to watch Discovery Channel long to learn anytime a big pile of rocks lets off steam, it can never be good, but when it's captured in art, it will always look awesome.

For The Thing, more Thor and even a little Wolverine, visit Rudy's personal website after the jump.
