MAKING A MARK: Gary Desluriers - Watchmen To Hell's Kitchen, He Paints It Black

Twice a week, Making A Mark gives an insanely talented artist some IADW brag-space. Today goes to Gary Desluriers, an American illustrator who brings a darkened sketchy Jim Dine feeling to a range of pop culture's best, from the pages of Watchmen, to a certain world famous wall-crawler. Just check this out;

Yeah, Spidey's black suit has never been improved on, and just look how well Gary blends it into a realistic city backdrop! Silk Spectre on the otherhand emerges from the darkness looking to catch attention and follow through with a punch!

Showcasing more of Desluriers uncanny knack to balance large amounts of black with sparse colour, I like the contrast these two create placed side by side. Daredevil and Dr Manhattan may be the red and blue man respectively, but the contrast between their power levels, catholic vs God-like and cosmic vs corner perspectives has me thinking they'd make a great team up, if not just for the conversations!

More Desluriers Daredevil? Okay, since you asked so nicely;

Has Frank Miller been given a lifetime award yet for creating a couple so attracted/ opposed/ combustible as Daredevil and Elektra? This shot shows while the relationship may be old by modern standards, but the sparks can still fly when it's rendered right!

  1. This guy is so good it's,it'

  2. Exactly OA! When I first saw that Daredevil/Elektra piece I had to do a quick search to make sure it wasn't promo art or a cover I hadn't seen before!

    Wicked stuff!
