NOW THAT'S A SPLASH PAGE: The Silver Surfer Needs No Wingman

Splash pages, you gotta love 'em. A blank canvas where the artist can hit you with a large dose of illustrated 'wow'. This week, after mentioning how Harvey Tolibao was stepping onto Green Arrow at DC with writer Ann Nocenti, I went back that night and re-read his sweet-sweet splash page filled work on the recent Silver Surfer mini-series. Math 1-0-1; Harvey + Norrin =

Ahh Surfer, where have you gone? You'd think if the Phoenix was returning to Marvel in the pages of Avengers vs X-Men, the Surfer would be the first to greet it, let alone who you'd try first on speed-dial.

Still, Harvey swapping the stars for the streets means fans of the Emerald Archer will be getting treated to art just as heavenly very, very soon.

  1. oh shit that is badass! i wonder sometimes if artists reference real surfing photos to illustrate stuff like this when it comes to the Silver Surfer.

  2. I wonder too Dave. But having seen the pencils to this piece, I can even vouch that that is no photoshopped in set of stars the Surfers placed on - but rather painstakingly drawn in detail the old fashioned way.

If he used any reference for that, I'd say some to get a natural surfing pose wouldn't be that much of a stretch!

  3. that's just an amazing piece. The attention to detail kills me, right down to the ripples on the board where his feet make contact.

  4. Hey Craig, cheers for the comments! Yeah I dug that too - a touch of the movie perhaps, but one that makes a lot of sense.

I should post up the pencils so everyone can see just how much detail there was!
