NOW THAT'S A SPLASH PAGE: James Spader Cast To Bring Perez's Ultron Splashie To Life

Splash pages, you gotta love 'em. A blank canvas where the artist can hit you with a large dose of illustrated 'wow'. This week, in celebrating the news that Marvel Studios has cast James Spader in the role of Ultron, I'm posting my definitive splashie of the robotic menace, by the legendary George Perez.

If I didn't wet myself when I saw this splash page in the back of Avengers Vol2 #15, it was only because my comic shop owner had the foresight to know what was ahead and secretly slipped a pair of depends undergarments on me.

Not only does George's relaxed yet powerful pose define cool, the classic Ultron 'Obliterate all mankind' speech by Kurt Busiek, sets the bells tolling that the ultimate Ultron story is ahead (and boy was it ever).

With Spader a pro at cold and distant roles on the likes of The Practice and Boston Legal, the three time Emmy Award winner is a great cast, regardless of if he is just voicing the character, providing motion-capture or more.

 What do you think?

  1. Well, that's interesting news. Not you wetting yourself, no, but it comes a close second to Spader playing Ultron [I just hope we get his voice and not an appearance as himself, as we want a proper robot Ultron, not a human one, if you know what I mean].
Certainly a high-calibre actor for the Avengers franchise; think Im happy with that!

  2. Thanks Karl - coming second on my own website ;) no worries, I can handle it.

Avengers sure seem to be hitting a great stride casting wise. Will be good to see where they do with this one and how!

  3. I'm good with this. I can't say I can see it yet, but I'm happy with the casting, mostly because I trust Spader to put himself in the role, and the role into him, if you know what I mean.

  4. You hit the nail on the head for me too Random - A large part of this role will be on what Ultron actually looks like. Believable CGI or not, it better have that classic looking Ultron face... it just has too!
