Sometimes you stumble across a portfolio where the artist only has a couple of comic based pieces, other times there can be just one work so brilliant, you'd risk being stoned to death by fellow art lovers for putting something else beside it. These are Random Works of Wow and illustrating the point this week is Australian artist Hong Wen with Thor.

Done as a commission for a friend, I crave how Hong infuses the Thunder God's costume with touches of lightning, to make him one hell of a fearsome sight on the battlefield! The colours, the glare and the debris all add up to one really mythological piece!

What do you think?   Sound off below, click to enlarge or view more Random Works of Wow here. To see more of Wen's works, click here.

  1. I love how the only really bright color is that red cape. All the others are blended beautifully around the flashes of lightning, bringing focus to them. It lends a stark impression of power to the overall work. It crackles.

  2. I never looked at it that way Random, but you are right. But like Superman, what's Thor without his cape right! Glad you liked it.

  3. Wow....just wow! I expect Marvel or somebody to snag this guy, since we all know they secretly read your blog Dan;) Fucking awesome work that I can easily see adorning Hannah's wall(s) of Thor art:)

  4. Hannah is the yardstick on awesome when it comes to Thor stuff Dale, so I think you could be right. Hopefully it ranks high enough to get a 'in plain sight' spot and not a 'behind pot plant' spot - but either way I'm sure it's worthy.

As for the comic pro's reading IADW, that's what happens when two Matrix looking guys in a bar say for a round of handles and some nachos they can program the return key in any organisation to load your webpage. Best twenty bucks I ever spent!

  5. I think I'm going to coin a new phrase, I'm not the "yardstick" on awesome, I'm the "cigarstick". :) It sounds tougher. And slightly less disciplinarian.
I'm going to need more walls, between all the cool stuff you come up with and the ROM art Dave throws my way.
@Dale, next time you see them, give them the link to my book on Amazon. I'll owe you a few.

  6. Ha ha, cigarstick;) Done and done:)

  7. Really Wow!
Not everyday an armour can be made sexy...
This gives a sense of light and movement. Very good!

  8. Thanks Aliera - you are right, it is a pretty hard drawing in terms of detail. Glad you liked it!
