THE COMICS' BEAT: The Human Torch In Eminem's 'Cold Wind Blows'

Mondays. They are worse than Dr Doom and after a heavy one, it can be a little hard to get the drum pumping again for the week ahead. As a former DJ, each Monday I dig into my collection, and chuck up a hit nodding to comics' best.

This week, it's Eminem. If Superman has the most songs dropping his name, Eminem is the artist with the most comic book references. Warning, while Cold Wind Blows also mentions the Hulk and Aquaman, the lyrics are explicit. If you are the offendable type, you might not wanna hit play. But if you're the kind that cries on the inside, the track is below.

"Oh b**ches don't like that, homie I'll be nicer to women
When the Aquaman drowns and the Human Torch starts swimmin'"

What do you think?  Full lyrics are here. To buy, visit and back here Monday for another Comic Beat!

  1. ~Ehhh, ol' Em's was in a bit o' a slump for awhile there... not his best. That's okay, though- because he came back HARD. And Rap God has a lot of comic/nerd references in it to boot! I mean, he's bloody Max Headroom in the video!
May be a bit on the nose- but speaking of The Human Torch; have you heard PM5k's Strike The Match? FLAME ON!

  2. Hey King - yeah the list I have of Eminem dropping comic references is almost as long as the list counting all of Superman's - I think Ems gets the upper hand though because he's the only one that's met The Punisher!

Yeah Strike The Match is pretty decent huh? Makes you wonder why Torchie doesn't yell 'Flame Off' but hey the hip hop style Skottie Young drew Johnny in in his own series way back when, couldn't have been that wrong huh?

  3. I guess go Em?
I used to have that very issue whose cover you spotlighted Dan. Simonson's FF run was pretty damn good, and even played around with time enough to fix some things, like the misc. appearances of all those Dooms over the years. I like the arc where they were stuck powerless on that Dinosaur Island and only Ben in his Thing suit stood a real chance. Those were the days.....

  4. Yeah Dale those Simonson issues were - reputedly - the last " official" FF story Marvel did before their unofficial back to basics reboot where nothing ever changes. FF expert extraordinaire Chris Tolworthy explains it in amazing depth both on our forum and his The Great American Novel. I just love it.
I was given a homemade CD of Eminem some years back as a favour ut have hardly listened to it really. ..wonder if this song is on it. I never knew the Torch had been mentioned in one of his songs.

Dan thanks for having WW in tbis weeks Freeze Frame, like you did a few weeks back.

  5. Thanks guys! What's odd is about three months ago I pre-wrote all the Comics Beat posts up until this one, just randomly selecting characters, then Human Torch ended up running when the character was in the headlines (hears X-Files whistle). Crazy!

It took me a while to warm to Walt on FF, even with him bringing Thor in for a few issues, his art was probably one of the most jarring takes on the characters for me as a fan. I'm not saying I didn't like it I did - as you can see by this post - but it was just so different from the style Marvel usually picked for the book, it came as a surprise. Those were the days indeed.

Karl, it could be. I like Eminem a lot - some of his stuff goes too extreme for me, but much of it is really, really talented wordplay, and catchy to boot. With lyric books not really a thing in CD's anymore, sometimes it's only on like the randomest listen you hear the comic reference drop and that was what happened with this. I used to start the CD at Not Afraid (the best track of the disc) and play to the end more often then let it play through from the start. Then I'm like - 'Hey, the dude just dropped a Fantastic Four ref!' Why didn't I catch this sooner?'

As for Wonder Woman no probs at all mr. On this here comp there's no character I have more material of than Wonder Woman - done right, my favourite character of all no doubt. In fact I keep thinking of having a 'Wonder Woman Week' on IADW to use a lot of it and address the fact that there's not much 'Wonder content' on the site as it stands (hangs head in shame).

Really need to get that sorted. Have great days all!

  6. Dan if I may. ...I have been working on an extensive ( I mean really extensive) piece on Wonder Woman that I promised for Dale's blog, but perhaps he won't mind if I let you have it when its finished. Its mainly a power ranking for her wbich has never been done in any worthwhile way before so would you be interested? Been working on it since around August and still have sone way to go.
So glad you said she's your most popular heroine on here. Also with the current writer Azzarello and the artist Cliff Chiang leaving the book in the summer ( I correctly predicted tbis was a three year long storyline) theres plenty to discuss.

  7. Thanks Karl! I remember Byrne tried to clear that up in his run, but other events since have muddied the waters a bit. I'd probably be looking at May for WW weekand sure could easily be interested. Maybe if that goes to Dale, you could shed other thoughts here. Just let me know.

  8. Post it here or @The House, doesn't matter to me Karl. I'm simply curious what you wrote regardless of where it goes.

    No pressure;)
