THE COMICS' BEAT: Matter Eater Lad In Guided By Voices' 'Matter Eater Lad'

Mondays. They are worse than Dr Doom and after a heavy one, it can be a little hard to get the drum pumping again for the week ahead. As a former DJ, each Monday I dig into my collection, and chuck up a hit nodding to comics' best.

This week, it's Matter-Eater Lad from The Legion of Super-Heroes. Now if you've laughed at the dude before for chewing his way through 31st century action and adventure, you might give him props now you know he has his own self-titled pop song. I don't think even Robin can claim that title!

"Yeah he's mad, he's Matter Eater Lad!"

What do you think?  Full lyrics are here. Be back here next Monday for another Comic Beat!

  1. Matter-Eater Lad is one of the best! Triplicate Girl was always my most favorite, though. Shout-out to Shrinking Violet, and Wildfire too! Legion of Super-Heroes > Teen Titans.

  2. Thanks King! I especially dig him now because if he was created today I don't think PC would let him be anything other than a cameo joke, but he's that great kind of crazy comics had back in the day.

Well until he goes cannibal that is.

He reminds me for some reason of the Legion audition issue where the interviewee's power is making fruit ripen. Maybe a DC themed cooking TV show could be on the cards. God knows its the only one that isn't already out there!

  3. He was such a silly character. M.E. Lad, even in the Five Year arc where the writers tried to make him front and center. And such a nerdy costume too!

  4. He does seem a bit more Hanna-Barbera than he does DC Karl - but able to eat your way though anything and still have rock hard abs and guns would be a secret many infomercial makers out their would kill to market!
