THE COMICS' BEAT: The Silver Surfer In T.Rex's 'Teenage Dream'

Mondays. They are worse than Dr Doom and after a heavy one, it can be a little hard to get the drum pumping again for the week ahead. As a former DJ, each Monday I dig into my collection, and chuck up a hit nodding to comics' best.

This week, it's the Silver Surfer in T.Rex's Teenage Dream. And who didn't dream about being Norrin Radd as a teen (or even last night)? Surfing through the colours of the cosmos, discovering new worlds. Sure, depending at what time in the Surfer's life you are talking about, you may be ending worlds too, but at least the KPI's of the role are clear.

"Silver Surfer and the Ragged Kid are all sad and rusted, boy, they don't have a gig
Believe me Pope Paul my toes are clean - whatever happened to the Teenage Dream?!"

What do you think?  Full lyrics are here. Be back here next Monday for another Comic Beat!

  1. Gosh, that's quite an obscure one, Dan. I used to love T-Rex [well, Marc Bolan more than anything] so it comes as some surprise to me that I don't recall this at all. Cracking tune all the same!

  2. Thanks Karl - yeah Norrin is a bit hard to find past the old Satriani album, but like you, it even took me a while to hear him in this one!

  3. I'll second Karl here. Big fan of Bolan myself (Children of the Revolution, 20th Century Toy), te never heard of this one before.
He was a big influence on his pal Bowie back in the day, so very sad that he died before his time.

And is it me, or does he look a lot like Johnny Depp and Tim Curry(Dr. Frankenfurter)?

  4. 'I'm just a sweet silver surfing Transvestite'? 'Come up to the lab and see what Galactus has on the slab...' - you know, the more I think on it, the more it makes sense! At least we know where 'Furter's spaceship was headed!
