NOW THAT'S A SPLASH PAGE: The Silver Surfer Takes Five

Splash pages, you gotta love 'em. A blank canvas where the artist can hit you with a large dose of illustrated 'wow'. This week, the Sentinel of the Spaceways, the Silver Surfer takes five minutes to sit on a board resting over endless space, without a Starbucks in sight.

As a dude with vertigo, I would love but pee my pants at doing this all at the same time. Not that the Surfer wears pants, but it might be safer for me to do my contemplation on a local beach as usual. Just sayin'

Big props to John Romita Jr for the splashie.

  1. That's a JRJR??? Does not even look like it!!! I'm sticking by the fact that ONLY Ron Lim and Mike Allred should EVER draw The Silver Surfer. He just NEVER looks right, otherwise...

  2. Sure is King. Not being a fan of either artist you mentioned, I'll happily be a renegade to that rule. Jack Kirby, John Buscema and Alex Maleev all do legendary takes on Mr Radd no fan should miss!

  3. Dan doesn't care for Lim or Allred's take on Surfer? Whoa....

This rendition by JRJR really is pretty well-drawn though, even if I'd rather he not. His style, Kirby-inspired though it maybe, doesn't jive with me overall.

    1. Yeah, I did not even recognize it as his style- and he looks too emaciated for me...
I dunno- to me; Surfer has never looked better than Ron Lim. I own that entire run. A close 2nd is Allred's current work. I love me so Kirby- but on Surfer: No.

    2. I will admit, I like my Surfer a bit bigger physically than he is here, but hey skinny dudes can wield the power cosmic too!

    3. * I love me some Kirby...
But, anyways- as a fat guy myself- I disagree with skinny superheroes.

  4. Silver Surfer was always one of my favourites, from way back in the 70s. Seeing this today hit the nail on the head, thank you.
